UYAS has had a very busy term indeed, with the continuation of three of our projects during the summer months, and our summer activities scheme within the South Manchester locality. UYAS now looks towards continuing our strong partnership with local high schools and community organisations as the autumn term approaches. Summer Activities During the Summer UYAS had been commissioned to deliver art-based projects in local community parks in the South Manchester area working primarily with 13-19 years olds providing them with a series of taster sessions which included a Jamming session, poetry and hands on arts activities.
Chorlton Water Park inconjuntion with WAC (Water Adventure Centre) turned form a scene of serenity to a place for young people and their families to come together and create a vibrant atmosphere ñ this year UYAS focused our activities on ëPeaceí coming together as a community, showing how a simple arts activities can pave the way to a peaceful future.
Beech Rd Park became the setting for a successful jamming session where young people were encouraged to pick up an instrument be it the drums, keyboard, bass, electric guitar, or vocal and basically set a rhythm together and jam even though this may have been the first time they have meet let alone tried to play together. A fantastic three-day event complimenting the arts ëPeace Gardení that was being created with peace doves blowing in the summer breeze and foam flowers being produced to add vibrate colour to the beautiful setting.
Chorlton High School The Music Makers at Chorlton High school have produced a fantastic piece of work, throughout the project 15 young people have worked alongside musician Dan Mitchell blending there musical talents to produce a unique style of funk, reggae, soul, R&B combined with distinct vocal ñ the young people have performed their tracks in front of their peers and for the ëUnity ñ Celebrating Diversityí evening at Chorlton High school, part of the programme for the Unity Festival. They have all been involved as a core group in our first Jamming session at the Beech Rd festival ñ UYAS will be continuing the fantastic work in the autumn term which has identified key areas in youth progression through music.
Thomas Aquinas High School The ambitious project UYAS started with a group of year 10 students who have never performed on stage before has seen fantastic results. In June 05 UYAS took these students on a residential which would see the young people taken away from their usual environment and placed in the calm scenic landscape of the Lake District. God spell the main focus whilst continuing to build upon the foundations already set by UYAS workers; confidence building, raising self esteem, team work and identity. The young people rose to the challenge well with magnificent work being produced ñ which is to be show during the new theatre opening at the school ready for a Christmas performance.
OMYOP The Piece 4 Peace project has continued throughout the summer months with the young people at OMYOP continuing to explore the current political climate ñ in reaction to the Beslan massacre the young people are creating a peace sculpture that will reside in the local community of Withington. The young people have been collecting a series of names from people within the community who are prepared to have a cast of there hands taken which will become part of the final piece - with Manchester City Council supporting the sculpture it will become an important symbol within the local community. This project will be continuing into the autumn term with a celebration of the project and all it has so far achieved on International World Peace Day ñ September 21st.
Pupil Referral Unit In supporting the PRU with their 'arts mark' we saw a series of different workshops and art forms coming together to decipher which particular art form would be the most effective come the autumn term. The young people took part in drumming workshops, video skills, dance, creative arts, and lyric writing. During the 12 - week project the young peoples individual needs were identified, UYAS workers focused primarily on team building & confidence raising exercises during each activity.
Toy Box Theatre ñ Community Circus Toy Box theatre has continued throughout the summer offering people of all ages to participate in circus skills including juggling, stilt walking, diablos, devil sticks, and globe walking. The skills of all the young people involved will be revealed during our Unity indoor event at the City art Gallery in November, which will also include a circus skills workshop.
