ëThumbs up for Chorltoní and the people who live here....

During the week leading up to 20th April, Unity Youth Arts & Sounds film-makers and youth workers, were out and about with a mobile studio finding out just what young people really think about Chorlton.

The response was good. Generally the young people who were interviewed and completed questionnaires really like Chorlton and the people who live here, but do not think there is enough on offer for them.
ìThereís lots of places to go if you have money or are over 18îÖ

Young people would welcome being able to access a wider range of activities especially in the arts ñ music, danceÖ Water sports and outdoor pursuits were also extremely popular. Most young people liked the leisure centre but wished it was bigger with fun slides in the baths!!

Particular requests in terms of sports faciltiies/activities in the parks/leisure centre were football & cricket clubs for younger people and cricket pitches in local parks which some of the interviewees thought were missing.

The library generally had the thumbs up in terms of homework support/computer access, but young people thought there should be more books in the range aimed at teenagers.

Access to most local Health services was okay although some young people expressed a wish for a young people friendly (specifically aimed at them) service where they could also access advice and information and not just around health issues. It should be confidential, this was very important for a few. The questionnaire was not specific enough to indicate which services they felt they specifically needed eg. a need for counselling services?

Some young people specifically declared an interest in politics and a few also were excited by the idea of exchange projects with the opportunity to travel. Many of the young people made good use of local youth service facilities in neighbouring wards both the voluntary and statutory sectors.
Young people felt that there should be other venues, where they could chill out and that was aimed at them and affordable.

Many were interested in joining a fun youth forum type activity project in the future and having their say about issues that affect their lives.

Contact us if you would like to be part of the forum - starting after the summer.
